On
February 15, 1995 The Tuscaloosa County Jail moved into its new
location at 1600 26th Avenue, in Tuscaloosa. This facility
houses all inmates both minimum and maximum security for the misdemeanor
as well as felony arrest issued by the courts. Overseeing this operation
is Chief of Operations, James Taggart.
The
technology, kitchen, medical and dental as the living quarters are
among the most modern in the state. This facility was constructed
at a cost of $8.2 million including renovations to the old Metro
facility which is now a part of the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
The
jail handles prisoners for all jurisdictions in Tuscaloosa County.
Included in the jail is a Drug Court and an Identification
and Extradition unit.

On
August 5, 2002 the Tuscaloosa County Jail received Accreditation
from the American Correctional Association. This makes the Tuscaloosa
County Jail the first and ONLY county jail in the State of Alabama
to receive Accreditation. The process for Accreditation is extensive
and required numerous changes and modifications to Jail Operations.
