A native of Tuscaloosa County, Chief Loyd Baker graduated from Central High of Tuscaloosa in 1981 and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama and a Master’s Degree in Justice Administration from Faulkner University in Montgomery. He has served the citizens of Tuscaloosa County for over 33 years.
Chief Baker began his career with a college internship at the Sheriff’s Office in 1983, volunteering with the Tuscaloosa County Youth Aid Division for two years. He was later hired as a dispatcher with the University of Alabama Police Department. Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Beasor Walker hired Baker as a detention officer in July 1986, and promoted him to Deputy Sheriff shortly thereafter.
Chief Baker has worked in most every area of the Sheriff’s Office, from patrol to most areas of investigation. He was assigned as an investigator with the Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit in 1989 and served there until he was promoted to sergeant in 1994. Baker worked patrol until he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1997, and was put in charge of the Tuscaloosa Metro Juvenile Division and Gang Unit. Baker was then made commander of the Criminal Investigations Division where he served until 2001.
In 2001, Baker became Commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit and led that unit for approximately 12 years. Baker was promoted to Captain while serving as the Homicide Unit Commander. He was also named Commander of the Sheriff’s Office Tactical Unit, which he had been a part of since becoming a deputy. In 2013, Baker was promoted to Chief of Administration. In addition to his administrative duties, Baker currently supervises all Technical Services specialty units (Tactical, K9, Aviation, EOD) within the Sheriff’s Office, the Training Division and Records Division.
